Testing Week Prep 101

This week, our group classes are re-testing certain lifts and workouts that they’ve been training for throughout the past 4 weeks. Lots of hard work has been put in both in class and in 1-on-1 sessions. BUT, the preparations aren’t over yet…

Yes, the heavy lifting and sweaty workouts are behind you, but there are 3 factors that play into your performance far more than most think:

  1. Sleep. If you’re not catching enough Zzzzs before major physical exertion, there is no way you’ll be able to perform at your best. Getting 7+ hours of sleep leading up to testing week is the #1 way to maximize your PRs. TIP: calculate what time you need to hit the hay tonight in order to hit 7+ hours of sleep. Then set an alarm accordingly to remind you to start winding down for bed in time.
  2. Fuel. Give your body the fuel it needs to perform. Prioritize nutrient-dense meals and add in extra effort towards limiting sugar and alcohol in the days leading up to testing week. Think of your body as a car engine – before a major race, you’re going to want to fill up the tank with high quality F1 fuel. If you’re creating meals that include dark leafy greens, a protein source, and a whole grain, you’ll be in great shape.
  3. Mindset. Your performance during testing week will directly reflect your mindset. Understand that progress looks different for everyone. Yes, it’s satisfying to see numbers go up and workout paces increase. But let’s zoom out for a second. What else has improved these past 4 weeks? Have you been more consistent with showing up at the gym? Have your energy levels during the day increased? Are you finding yourself eating healthier? Are you feeling more confident? These are all markers of progress we often neglect when we’re too focused on the number results at the gym. Prior to your first testing workout, analyze the questions above, and go into the workout more confidently knowing you’re improved other aspects of your lifestyle as well.
