I never planned on owning a gym.
Before starting 416, I was working a corporate job in sponsorship and fundraising while coaching CrossFit and personal training on the side. Fitness had always been a big part of my life. I played a lot of sports growing up, but rugby was where I really started taking training seriously. The more I learned about strength and conditioning, the more interested I became in helping other people improve their performance and confidence through fitness.
What eventually led to 416 wasn’t some big entrepreneurial vision. I simply wanted to coach people and create an environment where they could be successful.
Most gyms sold access. Access to equipment, access to a building, access to workouts. But the majority of people didn’t need more access. They needed coaching, guidance, accountability, and education.
So in 2011, I opened 416 Fitness Club (originally CrossFit 416)
Like most small business owners, I wore every hat imaginable. I coached classes, onboarded new clients, programmed workouts, cleaned floors, handled sales, and did whatever else needed to get done. There were plenty of difficult moments along the way, from recovering from a car accident and serious concussion in the early days of the business to navigating the 450+ days Toronto gyms were closed during COVID.
Fifteen years later, what makes me proudest isn’t the gym itself—it’s the team behind it. They’ve helped shape 416 into a place where people feel supported, challenged, and welcomed from day one.
Over the years, I’ve learned that fitness success has very little to do with motivation. Motivation comes and goes. What people really need is someone in their corner and a group of people who make them want to keep showing up.
That’s what 416 has become.
A place where great coaching, genuine relationships, and hard work come together. The workouts matter, but the people are what make this place special.
